The Louisville Zoo Gets Certified As Sensory Inclusive

The Louisville Zoo is now better equipped for guests with sensory sensitivities thanks to a certification process they completed.

The Kulture City Sensory Inclusive™ Certification process entailed the zoo staff being trained by leading medical professionals on how to recognize visitors with sensory needs as well as how to handle a sensory overload situation.

Sensory bags equipped with noise canceling headphones provided by Puro Sound Labs, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads will also be available to guests at the Zoo who feel overwhelmed by the environment. The Zoo has identified quiet zones for a quieter and more secure environment.

Their press release explains that sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions (1 in 6 individuals).

One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to overstimulation and noise, which is an enormous part of the environment in a venue like the Zoo. To navigate where to access these sensory bags, download the free KultureCity App before going to the Zoo and find out where to access them.

Also, on the app is the Social Story which will provide a preview of what to expect while enjoying an event at the Louisville Zoo.
