NASA Finally Opens 50-Year-Old Lunar Sample

August 14, 2019, Valladolid, Castilla y Leon, Spain.

We’re all guilty of procrastinating every once in a while – even the folks at NASA.

Researchers there just cracked open Lunar Sample 73001 – a rock sample gathered 50 years ago during the 1972 Apollo 17 mission.

It’s one of 2,196 rock samples brought back to Earth during the Apollo missions – three of which remain unopened today.

Scientists have been working since February to carefully remove the sample from its vacuum-sealed tube, in order to harvest the rock and gas contained inside.

NASA is hoping to send humans back to the moon by the year 2025.

Would you volunteer to travel to the Moon if you had the opportunity?
