Maybe ‘banned’ is a harsh word.
But there is a certain decorum expected by a member of the Royal Family….and taking selfies does not fit that model.

Did you also know there’s a list rules that the royals are expected to follow–even though some of which are a bit…outdated?
Ever notice that the little male heirs are always in shorts?
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share a photograph of The Duke and Prince George at Kensington Palace this morning. The image was taken shortly before Prince George left for his first day of school at Thomas’s Battersea. Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to share this lovely picture as Prince George starts school, and would like to thank everyone for all of the kind messages they have received.
It’s no coincidence.
Also— don’t expect much PDA between married royals OR family game nights involving Monopoly.
Both are frowned upon.
